Long story short, I am safely on Star Island with my parents, their dog, and Aunt Cara despite the world's attempt to interfere with that outcome. Shortly we will have kebabs for dinner.
Slightly longer version: thunderstorms in the Detroit area meant my flight from Ithaca was delayed for about two hours -- we just sat on the runway waiting for permission to take off. My connecting flight to the Twin Cities had already left by the time we arrived in Detroit, and all other flights to the Twin Cities were booked solid, so the Delta computer system automatically rebooked me 1) to fly to Atlanta, from which I would 2) fly to Minneapolis/St. Paul, and then 3) fly to Bemidji on the second daily flight and arrive around 10:30pm. Which is no good when you then need to drive a motorboat across a lake to an island in the dark... which is actually close to genuine darkness, since northern Minnesota is mostly woods and open water.
This was clearly ridiculous and I managed to change my destination to Duluth, which had a direct flight from Detroit departing around 12:15pm. Then I went and had lunch at 10:30am, because I'd been up since 4:30am and I was hungry. (Fuddruckers bacon cheeseburgers with grilled onions are the best thing ever, swear to god. Mmmmmm.) Getting my boarding pass took a bunch of work with the Delta central helpdesk (via phone courtesy of a friendly gate agent) because the computer system somehow thought I was going to Duluth, while also going to Atlanta, while also already in the Twin Cities preparing to board a flight to Bemidji. ARGH. But that got straightened out, and the Duluth flight was only delayed about half an hour, so all is well, even if Duluth is a much longer drive from Cass Lake than Bemidji is.
And now kebabs.
Life is good. :-)
