wherein Liz speechifies about elections
Feb. 5th, 2008 05:03 pmWork was kind of "Aaaaagh" all day long -- the kind of day where there's no single thing you can point to and say "That was the problem!" but it's just one thing after another and you constantly feel like you're running about twenty minutes behind yourself.
But! It is now over.
And I am going to kill another thirty minutes surfing the internet, and then I am going to vote in the New York Democratic primary election.
I'm not saying who I'm voting for, because I'm only about 80% decided, and that's after going back and forth and back and forth for, like, two weeks now. Whatever. I am going to hike down to Fall Creek and sign my name and go into the voting booth, and make a choice. That is democracy in action -- one woman, one vote. :-)
The thing I hate about cynics is that they say, "Well, you know, your one vote doesn't really count -- it won't change anything," but you cannot think like that or the system falls apart. Yes, usually elections aren't won by a single vote, but if everybody gives up and stays home, then we might as well declare ourselves a monarchy or something. Democracy is a responsibility as well as a right; it dies if you don't exercise it.
But enough speechifying. Back to websurfing. :-)

Date: 2008-02-06 05:36 pm (UTC)After all, who cares if Granny has to make the choice between eating and paying for her meds, as long as Granny lives down in Brownsville or the barrio, or in some nursing home somewhere? Who cares if the rivers are running brown, species are dying out and our kids have asthma because of the pollution in our air, land and waters, as long as they have their mountain retreats and luxury gas-guzzlers? They're rich and powerful, and that's all that matters! :P
