1. I am moderately peeved. See, I was hit by an idea last night and wrote another piece of "An Ounce of Prevention" -- yes, against my better judgment it seems to have become a WIP -- but I can't post it because my latest transfer disk has gone kerflooey.
Electronic media degeneration is such a pain.
Anyway, I am determined that this story, at least, will not have any sort of update schedule. I will write it when I damn well feel like it, and no oftener than that.

2. I've worked out an amusing way to decide what to write during NaNo. I'm going to buy two 6-sided dice, which lets me roll eleven potential numbers (2-12), and I've assigned ten stories a number, with the final one being 'choice.' Probabilities are weighted so the more important stories are more likely to come up: ie, "Beauty" is 7, because I really need that done by Thanksgiving, whereas "Harvest," an Ekanu story, is 2, because that has no time-pressure at all.
My dad suggested this method, when I told him about my subverted version of NaNo. He's not much use at emotional stuff, but he does have a lot of nifty ideas!
------------------------------
3. I've been rereading Death Note, which my local library now has through vol. 6. (Yay library!) I am struck, very much, by the disregard L shows to the law, human dignity, and, in many cases, human life. Both he and Raito are not nice people, not at all. The moral center of the story is the police officers, especially Yagami Soichiro and Aizawa. And maybe Rem, oddly enough, though definitely not Ryuk.
Misa is not stupid. She just has very strange priorities, which make her seem stupid because most readers can't figure out why anyone would give those priorities such weight. She's also reckless and doesn't always stop to think her actions through all the way. But remember -- Misa outsmarted Raito on at least one occasion, and she tricked Higuchi into revealing that he was the third Kira. A stupid person couldn't have done that.
And I think I found an error. One of the "How to use the Death Note" sections says that if you misspell a person's name 4 times by accident, that person will not die, and will thereafter be immune to the Death Note's power. If you misspell the person's name 4 times on purpose, you die. However! The second person Raito killed -- that sleazy motorcycle guy -- only spoke his name, so Raito had to guess at the spelling. I believe he wrote 6 variations.
So why did the motorcycle guy die? And since the misspellings were, to some degree, deliberate, why didn't Raito die?
I realized that the picky detail type rules seem to have been elaborated later on, and Ohba had probably forgotten the details of that scene by that point, but still. Sloppy!

Date: 2006-10-30 05:07 pm (UTC)The problem is just that my floppy disks are several years old, so they're more prone to random errors than new disks. When they all conk out on me, I'll buy a new pack. Until then, I'll just grumble a lot.
It's okay. I actually like grumbling. ;-)
