homemade poll time again!
Nov. 5th, 2005 10:40 pmSo, if I joined
thirtyforthree and started writing ficlets after November, which threesome should I choose?
Ginny/Harry/Draco -- The dynamics there are fascinating, especially the potential for possessive obsession...
Harry/Luna/Draco -- Trust me, it could work. Go read Paint the Town if you don't believe me.
Ginny/Harry/Hermione -- I've always meant to write this but haven't had a really good reason to. I almost got there once, but I chickened out while the ficlet was still just Ginny/Hermione.
Faith/Duo/Sasuke -- The continuing adventures of the "Lemonade" trio! ...On second thought, I should finish the original story first. *sigh*
Ginny/Hermione/Luna -- Hey, crack is fun!
-----------------
ETA: Have claimed Ginny/Harry/Draco. *copies list of themes and saves for moments of writer's block* Muahahahaha!!!

Date: 2005-11-06 04:51 am (UTC)Carefully, of course. :-) I find that most fictional relationship can be made to work if the author sets things up well and then balances them correctly. (Ginny at the center? Since when? I'd pick Harry as the obvious bone of contention.)

I am as bad as the next person in playing around with outcomes that are canonically improbable, but at least I try to base my alterations in something realistic.

Re: ooops
Date: 2005-11-06 09:17 pm (UTC)Second, Draco is not stupid. This is the boy who fixed the Vanishing Cabinet and successfully organized a Death Eater strike into Hogwarts. Yes, Harry does tend to get the better of him, but I think that can mostly be attributed to Harry having better friends and support systems. So no, I cannot have "Stupid!Draco like he is in canon" because in canon, Draco is not dumb.
Third, I don't think Draco is particularly sexy, but then, I don't think Tom Felton is particularly sexy either. Nor do I think Harry and Ginny are terribly sexy. I think they're reasonably attractive normal people -- in other words, they're not gorgeous, but neither are they ugly. They're just people. Furthermore, when I do describe Draco, I do make a point of noting that he has a fairly narrow face, is probably on the skinny side (like Harry, for that matter), and is pale-skinned (and not 'glowing pale alabaster' skin, just pale, as if he doesn't get enough sun).
Fourth, Harry canonically pays a lot of attention to Draco, moreso than Draco's actual attempts to irritate him really call for. This gets particularly marked in HBP, where even Ron and Hermione comment that he seems a bit obsessed. Draco pays an equal amount of attention to Harry, until he has bigger things (like war and assassination) to worry about. That attention certainly doesn't have to translate into any sort of sexual/romantic attraction, but this is fanfiction. I'm allowed to play a bit fast and loose with probabilities. :-)
Fifth, I think the dynamics of a Ginny/Harry/Draco threesome would be very interesting to explore. They're all very competetive people, and possessive in their own ways -- they don't like other people playing with their toys, so to speak (though Harry and Ginny, at least, couch this in protective terms). They have quite a lot in common, also: they have all been Seekers, they've all had extensive brushes with darkness/evil, they're all isolated in some ways, they're being thrust into adulthood too young, etc.
So. Yes, I 'need' to put Draco in. He won't be 'cool' because I'm bad at writing 'cool' (and I think coolness is overrated anyway), and he won't be 'sexy' in the stereotypical way you seem to be objecting to, but I won't bash him either.
Sorry for going on so long, but I wanted to be clear.

Date: 2005-11-06 06:47 pm (UTC)Now, on Naruto (should have written this days ago but Internet wasn't working) - the Uchiha are somehow related to the Hyuuga, in canon, and the Hyuuga are the original clan, though nobody seems to know what is the relationship, how did the Byakugan change into the Sharingan, or how did the two clans break away from each other.
The Sharingan is said to be inferion to the Byakugan, but when you really think about it, the Sharingan is an specialized weapon, with its most useful configurations being the ability to read your opponent's moves and its genjutsu (and torture) amplifying features, as opposed to the more well-known abilities to copy moves and see through genjutsu. And those are the inborn qualities of the Sharingan. The first two have to be mastered, so comparing it to the Byakugan, which apparently gives you automatic abilities - and considering that you are not necessarely born with the Sharingan - it still turns out to be inferior.
However, there is something the Byakugan doesn't grant, and intensive training with the Sharingan does - Doujutsu. Not only did Itachi prove that the Sharingan can induce some incredible, near-unbreakable genjutsu, Kakashi proved it can be used as a weapon all on its own. Chyio-obaasan from Suna also made some interesting references to Doujutsu and Sharingan users, suggesting that the Mangekyou had been used during the war - even though it seems obvious there are very few or no advanced Sharingan users when Itachi kills everybody.
Also, on Itachi killing everybody - the Uchiha clan was quite mysterious. Those clan meetings, Shishui being "valuable" to them, the suicide note claiming he "could not follow the clan's path any longer", Itachi telling Sasuke where "the real secret is written"... I found interesting that when Sasuke asks Itachi whether he really killed Shishui, Itachi says "thanks to him, I was able to obtain this Mangekyou Sharingan", but does not confirm the death. Itachi also says that if Sasuke obtained the Mangekyou, there would be "three people who can handle the Mangekyou Sharingan". Some people think the third guy is Kakashi, but who knows? And a weird detail that might be false - the Wikipedia says Shishui was known as "shuushin no Shishui". I've seen that translated as Shishui of the Mirage, but Shuushin was Yondaime's personal jutsu, as seen in Gaiden 2 (chapter 240).
And back to the Hyuuga-Uchiha notes - it rises lots of little questions, doesn't it? After all, the Byakugan is a perfectly stable bloodline limit. So, remembering that the Sharingan does have its own little uses... was it created on purpose, or just as an accident? Did the Clan Head know about its creation? If it was an experiment, it would probably have been tested on a Branch House member, and I don't think the Hyuuga would be much interested in creating a new great clan (unless said clan would be a certain ally), so how did the Uchiha become a clan of their own?
Kakashi implies the Mangekyou affects your vision. Is it possible that it was a way to try and control the Uchiha - weaken the warriors before they get too powerful? (...Meh, no, too far-fatched. Guess I'm getting a bit too carried away.)
Other interesting (but uninportant) things I noticed: on the Valley of the End, Kyuubi saying Naruto and Yondaime are really alike (duh). Somewhere in chapters 150-160: Naruto, in a festival, puts on the replica of an ANBU mask, and promptly falls face-first on the ground. He is told to watch his step while using that mask, because it is difficult to see with it on. (gotta remember to write to Maldoror about that one.) When Jirayia and Tsunade are talking and getting drunk, he tells her he knows she still cares about Konoha, "because that one time...", before she tells him to shut up - implying she did something important for Konoha even during her self-imposed exile.
...And now I suddenly got this idea about the Branch House having been created because of a possible Uchiha fiasco. Oh gods.
